Peck & Co., PhiladelphiaReprinted in 1974 under the patronage of the Shrewsbury Historical Society, Shrewsbury, New Jersey, with a new introduction.Second Reprint 1992 ELLIS INDEX to the History of Monmouth County, New Jersey by Franklin Ellis, 1885By Norma Lippincott SwanPublished by the Jerseyana Club (1962-1972) of the Shrewsbury Boro School and of the Shrewsbury Historical Society, Shrewsbury, New JerseyPrinted by Brookdale Community College Press, Lincroft, New Jersey, 1973Second Reprint 1992 It is the second reprint of these two volumes that we are selling as a set today on behalf of the Shrewsbury Historical Society. Both are exquisitely hard bound and in NEW and EXCELLENT CONDITION. Both, being out of print, are treasured possessions of many Monmouth County individuals and as well as historians and libraries in other parts of New Jersey and the United States. A large 902-page book, History of Monmouth County, New Jersey, contains a very great collection of Monmouth County memorabilia, “producing an authentic and connected narrative of events of general importance or interest, which have occurred in the territory now comprised in the county of Monmouth, or in which its residents have been actors; confining the account as closely as practicable to the limits of the county, and to its former and present inhabitants, and referring to outside matters only so far as is necessary to show the connection of events.” It begins with a chapter on location, boundaries and natural features of Monmouth County, and continues with chapters on the subjects of archaeology and paleontology, the Dutch, English, and proprietary rule in New Jersey, the Indian occupation, early settlement and land titles, the provincial revolt, Monmouth County in the Revolution, War of 1812, Mexican War, Civil War. In addition are histories of each of the county townships, “embracing accounts of churches, schools, societies, and other local organizations, and also special matters intended chiefly for reference. Other portions of the work are necessarily arranged according to subjects of which they treat. A prominent feature of the work is the mention of early settlers, and of the families descended from them.” The 247-page Ellis Index is unique because it is useful even without reference to the book, History of Monmouth County, New Jersey by Ellis. The Ellis Index has thousands of items of interest to genealogists and historians, including dates and references to the inhabitants, the formation of towns and townships, churches, schools, lodges and numerous other facts pertaining to the history of Monmouth County. Franklin Ellis (deceased 1885) also wrote the histories of two counties in New York State, two in Pennsylvania and one in Michigan; little else is known about Mr. Ellis. Norma Lippincott Swan was born in Navesink, NJ, in a pre-revolutionary house where she lived most of her life. Her father owned the village store and was the local postmaster. Miss Swan was a victim of muscular dystrophy and was confined to a wheelchair for many years before she died on June 27, 1957 at the age of 84. It was during this period of her life that she compiled the Ellis Index. Please email me your questions. You are buying from a trusted, highly recommended eBay seller.
