Description
From an estate sale last year, this century-old book is an amazing study in genealogy and family history of the day.  At a major bookseller there is only one other copy offered for $245 but we bought and offer this copy for less.  The source was the estate of a LORING family member, a name associated here with the early development of the Twin Cities (Minneapolis & St. Paul), Minnesota! Published by The American Historical Society of New York, the hand-colored cover page itself is a work of art.  The book measures about 14" high, about 11" wide and 3 1/4" thick, weighing in pre-packaging at 9-10 pounds.  The cover shows a lot of edge wear but is still quite intact as we'd guess the book was held by the Loring family from the year it was compiled.Biographies, some Heraldry (coat-of-arms), Pictures and other quality materials cover on the order of some 90 Family Names that'll we'll try to list as thoroughly as we can. "American Families";  genealogical and biographical from most authentic sources including much valuable material drawn from hitherto unpublished family records (circa 1900-1920 we'd guess) with accurate reproduction and description of ancient emblazonry compiled by Masters of Genealogcial and Heraldic Science... is what it says on the cover page.    note: stamped deluxe edition limited to fifty numbered and registered volumes, number 9.About 428 pages, pictures, crests.  Most pictures or crests are shown on a full page with some other notable photographs.  Of the 92 estimated names, there are 31 pages devoted to personage photos, 3 to important artifacts or prized possessions and we count about 12 full page coat-of-arms (coats of arms) or heraldry images.      note:  we've placed squares or other lines over the eBay images that are not in the actual images. We think these books may've been produced on a custom basis with the range of names perhaps selected by the ordering family as the only copies I've seen had a different series of names.  It's the kind of book you'd expect to see in an upper-class home in the early 1900's and beyondThe names followed by number the approximate number of pages for the biography / images, the page-size photographs (p), the coat of arms (c) and more pictures, including:  Royle (19), Houston (5), Murray (3), Malcolm (5), Failing (12, 2p), Corbett -Corbet (7), Forbush (3), Jackson (20, 3p, 1c, 2 other), Bissell (5, 2p, 1c), Beard (3, 1c), Crosby (7, 1p), Brackett (2), Shedd (4), Stickney (3), Chase (4), Wood (2), Chamberlain (2), Burr (9, 2p, 1c), Jackson (6, 2p, 1 other), Elliot (4, 1c), Corbit (3), Brinton (2), Wilson (2, 1p), Mitchell (3, 1p), Newcomb (7), Patterson (3), Burr (7, 2p), Heyworth (5, 1c), Waterman (4, 1c), Smith (7, 1c with Perkins & Stone), Stone (4), Perkins (4), Irish (5, 3p)...Burritt (3), Campbell (3), Van Etten (4), Gorton (5), Webster (6), Benedict (7), Thompson & Allied Families (12), Winslow (6), Williams (3), Richmond (7), Hopkins (1), Ruggles (9), Emerson (12, 1p), Talcott (7), Norton (1), Rockwell (3), Fuller (10), Hinchcliff (7, 1p), Agnew (12), Scott (3), Douglas (3), another Scott (3), Piper (3), Brobst (1), Block (1), Melick (2), Start (8), Gould (3), Tucker (2), Pauli (2, 3p, 1c), Young (3), Loring (6, 1c), Barton (5), Wells (3), Lancaster (3, 1p), Rowe (2, 1p), White (2), Beaumont (2, 1p), Heywood (6, 1p), Eaton (10, 1p)...Widdicomb (4, 1p, 1c), Hewitt (2, 1c), January (6, 1p of Davis), Thruston (4), Buckner (3), Churchill (5), McKinley (1), Poper (3), Harrison (1), Armistead (2), Blackwell (2), Eliot - Elliote - Elliot (9), White (2), Hill (2), Ward (3), Leete (3), Harlankenden (4) and Poe (3).  The INDEX spans about 9 pages.  The names and other notes are at the best of our ability to note, it's a long list to compile the net figures with 100% accuracy.Leather or leather-like with cloth binding, shelf wear mostly to edges with light deterioriation, pageset is excellent, most if not all pictures covered by a protective tissue, some yellowing or browning perhaps due in part to the paper availaible at the time, glossy coat-of-arms / herealdry pages that are in color while photographs are in black & white. The initial bid is below our cost and well below any other copy I could find on other bookseller web sites for a comparable issue. If many of these 92 names are in your family history, this will likely prove to be an interesting book to study and display.                                                               Celebrate your ancestry! S&H to the high bidder by MEDIA MAIL in the USA (input your zip code) and MINNESOTA bidders may pay sales tax. INSURANCE at your option for the risk of USPS loss or damage as our liability ends with careful packaging and delivery to the post office.  The insurance amount will depend on the final bid level.
