Description
The Report of the Commission to Locate the Site of the Frontier Forts of Pennsylvania, Volumes 1 and 2. Printed by Clarence M. Busch, State Printer of Pennsylvania 1896. The report was commissioned by Governor Pattison on Pennsylvania. Book is divided into 5 sections. First section is between the North an West Branches of th Susquehanna River, with the addition of Fort Augusta in Sunbury and was explored by John M. Buckalew. Second section is known in history as the Wyoming Valley Region and was explored by Sheldon Reynolds. Third section is between the Delaware and Susquehanna rivers, south of the Blue Mountains, except Fort Halifax and Fort Augusta and was explored by Henry M. M. Richards. Fourth section is the Juniata and Cumberland Valleys, including Fort Halifax, east of the Susquehanna river and was explored by Jay Gilfillan Weiser. Fifth section is the section lying west of the Allegheny mountains designated as Western Pennsylvania and was explored by George Dallas Albert. Books contain many maps, diagrams, sketches, and many color prints of the Forts and Blockhouses of Frontier Pennsylvania. There are over 200 Forts and Blockhouses listed in the index of these 2 books. Many of the the maps are just one or two page maps but there are 4 fold-out maps in these books. One is the Plan for Fort Ligonier, a map of Hannastown, a Historical map of Southwestern Pennsylvania, and a plan of Fort Bedford. Volume 1 contains 627 pages and Volume 2 also contains 627 pages not including the index to both volumes. Each book measures 6 1/4 inches by 9 1/2 inches and is 1 1/2 inches thick. Both volumes do show some minor wear. The covers have some wear on the corners and back binding, but are both complete covers and still attached to the books. The fold-out maps in both books still are attached and are not ripped. Volume 1 does have a few pages in the middle of the book that have seperated from the books binding. Other than that the pages are all in good shape. A very nice two volume set of books about the history of Frontier Pennsylvania and its Forts. The books are loaded very interesting facts and pictures, well too many to list all. If you have any questions please write and I will answer as best as I can. I accept Pay Pal, money orders and cashier checks. I include delivery confirmation on all items and will ship within 3 business days of recieving payment and confirmed shipping address. Thanks for looking.
