Enzo Ferrari was born in Modena on 18 February 1898, the second of two sons. His father, Alfredo, owned a small company specialising in steel structural work. In September 1908 Enzo’s father took him to Bologna to see the Coppa Florio road race, which was won by Felice Nazzaro in a Fiat. From that moment the ten-year-old Enzo knew exactly what he wanted to do with his life. The first car Enzo Ferrari built under his own name was a racing car. It won the second race in which it was entered, which was a clear sign of many great things to come for Maranello. Ferrari participated in many forms of motor racing over the years, but its longstanding focus has been on Formula 1. It is only natural then, that advancements made in F1 would eventually find themselves being incorporated into Ferrari’s road-going cars. Ferrari’s road cars have always been derived from their competition cars. As Enzo Ferrari once explained, “For a constructor with standards for competition the normal evolution is as follows: from the Formula 1 to the prototypes; then from the prototypes to production.” This transcendence from F1 to road was seen nowhere more than in the F40, which by being more prototype racer than road car lived up to its reputation of being a race car for the road – that is until its successor, the F50, was introduced. The F50 employed an uprated version of the naturally aspirated V-12 being used by Ferrari’s Formula 1 team in the early 1990s. Like its race brethren, it also featured a carbon fibre chassis, which incorporated the engine as a stressed member. At its launch, the F50 was described as the closest one could get to driving a Formula 1 car on the road. However, the F50 would be succeeded, and again the division between road and race car was minimized further in this new car, the Enzo. Announced at the 2002 Paris Motor Show, the car was built to celebrate Ferrari’s first Formula 1 World Championship win of the new millennium, a particularly satisfying one, with Michael Schumacher taking the title in record time. Accordingly, it seemed fitting to name the car in memory of the company’s founder, who had never wavered in his commitment to racing. It was Schumacher, the most successful Grand Prix driver in history with seven Driver’s World Championships to his name, who is credited with much of the development work on this car and he is the proud owner of an Enzo. Luca di Montezemolo, Ferrari’s President and CEO, spoke of what Ferrari wanted to accomplish: “We wanted to go further with road car design than our company has ever gone before. I had to be sure everyone understood that this was to be a super-extreme Ferrari, so I asked our designers and engineers to go a little too far with their work in the beginning, knowing that they could restrain the design and technology a little, if necessary.” So “super-extreme” was the Enzo that it can be likened to Schumacher’s F1 car with a sports car body. The spec sheet certainly read like that of an F1 car: carbon fibre chassis, carbon ceramic disc brakes and paddle operated gearbox. However, Ferrari also took the liberty of furthering the Enzo’s performance by incorporating a number of features that were banned from F1, such as a full ground effects floor pan and active aerodynamics. Whereas the F40 and F50 disguised their race car inspiration underneath their Pininfarina-designed bodies, the Enzo embraced it. Pininfarina showcased the Enzo’s F1 heritage by incorporating a pronounced nose and giant rear venturis. The aerodynamics of the Enzo were so effective that unprecedented levels of grip were achieved with minimal drag. This downforce generated by the underbody of the Enzo enabled the car to do without the massive rear wing both the F40 and F50 depended upon to stay planted at speed. Furthermore, computer-controlled adaptive aerodynamics, tested at Fiorano and perfected in Ferrari’s wind tunnel, enabled the car to generate varying levels of downforce depending on speed and driver input. Thus downforce and drag were decreased during high-speed straight line driving and increased when needed during cornering and braking. The effects of all this technology made the Enzo the greatest performing road-going Ferrari ever. Production was very limited and only existing Ferrari customers were invited to buy one. Only 349 cars were originally planned and all were sold before production even began. Later, after numerous requests, 50 more cars were made, bringing the total to 399, and ultimately the 400th Enzo was given to Pope John Paul II. The Ferrari Enzo presented here is finished in Rosso Corsa and has a very low mileage – about 5,000 kilometres. It was delivered new to Spain where it has remained in the careful hands of its first owner, an avid Ferrari collector and a regular contender in the Ferrari Challenge.
