Ferrari celebrated its 40th anniversary in a spectacular manner with the announcement in 1985 of the F40, which saw the light of day two years later. A development of the 288 GTO, it was intended to be the highest expression of Ferrari technology, practically a race car for the road. It would also prove to be the last Ferrari signed off by Enzo Ferrari himself. A decade later, as the marque celebrated its golden anniversary, Luca di Montezemolo unveiled the F50 in 1995 at the Geneva Motor Show in Geneva, Switzerland with the words “Fifty years of racing, fifty years of winning, fifty years of hard work.” Alongside the various dealers, distributors, customers and friends in attendance, such Ferrari notables as Niki Lauda watched as Piero Lardi Ferrari and Sergio Pininfarina removed the cover on the eagerly anticipated successor to the F40. While the F40 was certainly advanced in every respect, the F50 set the bar even higher. Designed to be a showcase of Ferrari’s Formula 1 racing technology in the ultimate Ferrari road car, the 520 horsepower produced by the 4.7-litre V-12 engine made it the most potent road car ever produced by the Prancing Horse. Further reminiscent of the layout of Ferrari’s contemporary F1 cars, a six-speed longitudinal gearbox, complete with limited slip differential, was fitted behind the engine, between which was mounted the dry sump’s oil tank. For the first time in a Ferrari road car, the engine/gearbox/differential assembly acted as a load-bearing structure within the chassis, which was made entirely of Cytec aerospace carbon fibre and weighed a mere 102 kilograms (225 pounds). Pininfarina clothed this chassis with bodywork made of carbon fibre, Kevlar and Nomex honeycomb materials. Giving nothing away on the aesthetic side to the practical demands of cheating the wind, this shape is a testament to modern aerodynamic design. Sensuous and at the same time menacing, it clearly expresses the muscular power which lies underneath the clear engine cover. It was, in many respects, a more civilized Ferrari Formula 1 machine with a second seat and a sports car body. Only 349 examples were to be built, ensuring the exclusivity worthy of such a project. As expected, these Ferrari supercars were sold to the company’s most important clients. The F50 on offer, chassis 105193 was delivered on July 12, 1996 to HRH Prince Saud Bin Fahad Bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud to his residence in Paris, France. Build number 148 of 349, HRH retained the car until 2002 at which point the car was sold to the U.K. where it was then registered. Finished in red with a black and red interior, this F50 has accumulated relatively low mileage from new. While the odometer currently reads 993 miles, it is known that a Ferrari dealer replaced the speedometer three years ago, when it was showing 2,724 kilometres, to comply with UK rules and regulations. With a recent full service by official Ferrari dealer Joe Macari, the Formula 1 and IMSA series 333 SP-based V-12 is ready to provide 105193’s next owner with an extraordinary driving experience quite unlike that of virtually any other road-going sports car.
