In 1948 at the Turin Motor Show Ferrari displayed two cars, a 166 Mille Miglia Barchetta and a 166 Inter Coupé. It was testament to Enzo Ferrari’s character that he had achieved such a feat so soon after the close of the Second World War. Italy was defeated and in financial and political turmoil, but it did not stop Ferrari, whose company had been manufacturing machine tools throughout the war years, from announcing that he was going to manufacture Grand Prix cars, competition sports cars and road-going sports cars. He still had Luigi Bazzi from his Alfa Romeo days with him as chief engineer and in 1946 Gioacchino Colombo, his genius engine designer, was back in the Ferrari fold. The first real Ferrari to be built was the 125, which used a Colombo-designed 1.5-litre short stroke V-12 of extreme complexity for the time. The 125 (named for the displacement of a single cylinder) was quickly winning races. Ferrari then built two 1.9-litre cars, Colombo increasing the engine’s bore and stroke. One of these cars won the Turin Grand Prix in October 1947 but they were quickly superseded by a 2.0-litre model, the Typo 166. The designer, Giovanni Michelotti, worked closely with Alfredo Vignale, one of the newest coachbuilders in Turin; the pair had worked together at Stabilimenti Farina. Their method of coachbuilding was unique and truly artisan in nature. Michelotti would draw the design at 1:1 scale and then Vignale would translate the drawing straight onto the aluminium sheets they used. The only tools used consisted of a wooden hammer, a tree stump, a flat mallet, a sack of sand and finally an anvil and a flat hammer. The first Michelotti design for Ferrari was called the Coupé Grand Sport. This design, with variations, was adapted for use on ten 166 Inters with short chassis. Ferrari 166 Inter chassis 0071S is one of these ten cars with a Michelotti-designed body. The Typo 195 was a development of the Typo 166 with the engine enlarged to 2,340cc, increasing the horsepower output. Records show that 0071S was delivered to the Cerana brothers of Busto Arsizio on 13 April 1950. Count Cerano returned the car to the Ferrari factory in September 1951 and ordered it to be upgraded to 195 specifications. Normal 166s were fitted with a single 32DCF Weber carburettor. In the case of 0071S, the original build sheets contain handwritten notations reflecting the upgrade to three carburettors of the racing 36DCF type Webers. Later, 0071S was sold to Edoardo Lualdi, who in turn sold it to Carlos “Charlie” Menditeguy, an accomplished racer who raced in Formula 1 between 1953 and 1960. Menditeguy shipped the 166/195 Inter Vignale Berlinetta to Argentina, ultimately selling it to Pablo Napoli of Buenos Aires. Throughout its history, 0071S has been raced in a variety of events, both in Italy and Argentina. In 1979 the Ferrari was imported to the USA by Forristal’s GT Cars in Houston, Texas. Having been offered for sale by several well-known specialists, it was ultimately sold to American collector Ed Weschler of Nashotah, Wisconsin. He raced the car at the Chicago Historic Races in July of 1987. It was later bought by Stephen Dudley, who campaigned it extensively, including the European and North American Ferrari Historic Challenge series, Mille Miglia, Tour Autos, Tour de España, Targa Florio Revival, Le Ronde du Ventoux Hillclimb, Le Mans Classics, and Monaco Historiques. Competitive results include winning the Historic Class of the Ferrari North America Challenge Rally in Colorado in 1999 and the Performance Index for Plateau 2 at the 2006 Le Mans Classic. 0071S was the recipient of the Best Unrestored Race Car Award at the Concours d’Elégance at the Merrill Lynch/Brian Redman International Challenge, at Elkhart Lake in 1998. Additionally, the Ferrari won the Preservation Cup at the XIV Cavallino Classic in January 2005 and participated in the Concorso d'Eleganza at Ferrari’s 60th Anniversary in 2007. Most recently 0071S was featured in the book Ferrari Argentina – Sports Cars by Cristian Bertschi and Estanislao Iacona. As reported in the Ferrari Owners’ Club of America publication Ferrari Happenings (9 February 2001), Sydney Brown, in a report on the Cavallino Classic, said, “I must mention one car that, dollar-for-dollar, must give its owner more fun, both in the USA and Europe, since wherever I go it seems to be there; Stephen Dudley’s 166/195 coupe looks ‘lived-in’, both inside and out but it goes like stink and manages to stay ahead of stuff that it, theoretically, shouldn’t be able to live with. It appeared on the concours lawn at The Breakers on Saturday. I don’t know what class it was entered in but I would give it a prize for just being there!” This very rare early Ferrari is in largely original condition, the only non-original parts being the fire system, fuel cell and external ignition cut-off. All the original parts are included with the car and it comes with the original factory build sheets, Ferrari Certificate of Authenticity, FIVA document and current FIA-HTP papers. The 166 Inter has been personally maintained by Rick Bunkfeldt of Vintage Restorations for over 25 years and has competed at the Monaco Historique Grand Prix and Le Mans Classic since being overhauled.
