This lot is EC taxes paid and originates from Germany Ferrari’s first car was the 1.5-litre 125 produced in 1948 and was powered by the technically advanced, Colombo-designed V-12 engine. During the development of this engine the bore was gradually increased to give greater capacity, first growing to 1.9 litres in the 159, 2.0 litres in the 166 of 1948, and then to 2.4 litres in the 195 from 1950. The 2.6-litre 212 was launched at the Brussels Motor Show in 1951. The 212 was bodied by Ghia, Vignale, Touring and others, and also became the basis for Pinin Farina’s first creation on a Ferrari chassis. The meeting that forged one of the most strategic relationships in automotive history took place between Battista “Pinin” Farina and Enzo Ferrari in Tortona, halfway between Ferrari’s Maranello facility and Farina’s Turin base, neither man wanting to give the other the privilege of playing host. It was a meeting that established a special relationship, which would produce some of the most spectacular cars of all time. Farina’s son, Sergio recalled the meeting, “I was twenty-five years old at the time and my passion for motor racing knew no bounds. My father had been a racing driver, my cousin Nino Farina was Formula 1 World Champion, so racing ran in the family. For me, Ferrari was a symbol of victory and of the excellence of Italian motorcars, and I longed to be part of it. It is not difficult to imagine how I felt that afternoon when my father, without taking his eyes of the road for one moment told me his decision as we drove back to Turin: ‘From now on you’ll be looking after Ferrari, from A to Z. Design, engineering, technology, construction – the lot!’ – I was over the moon with happiness.” The Ferrari 212 was produced between 1951 and 1953 with over 100 examples manufactured. The series consisted of 212 Exports, whose chassis numbers had the suffix EL (Export Lungo) and the 212 Inter which carried EU at the end of the chassis number. This stood for Europa, a designation sometimes given to late 212 Inters. Racing success for the Ferrari 212 was immediate. In 1951 Vittorio Marzotto won the Tour of Sicily in one of these cars, an even-numbered 212 Export. The Coppa Inter Europa was won by Luigi Villoresi, while Gianni Marzotto won the Coppa Toscana, again an even-numbered 212 Export. However, the most important victory was, without a doubt, the 1951 Carrera Panamericana. The cars were driven by Luigi Chinetti and Piero Taruffi who finished first and Alberto Ascari and Luigi Villoresi who were second. These were entered by Franco Cornacchia and run by Centro Deportivo Italiano and their 1-2 victory was a tremendous advertising coup for the rich North American market. The main importer, Luigi Chinetti, would go from strength to strength. The Ferrari 212 Inter Europa presented here, chassis number 0265 EU, was purchased new by film director Roberto Rossellini as a wedding anniversary present for his wife, the movie star Ingrid Bergman. Rossellini himself was one of the most important directors of Italian neo-realist cinema. His love of film began as a boy, when his father built the first cinema in Rome, thus giving the young Rossellini unlimited access to the movies. In 1948 he received a letter from a famous foreign actress proposing a collaboration. Dear Mr. Rossellini, I saw your films Open City and Paisa, and enjoyed them very much. If you need a Swedish actress who speaks English very well, who has not forgotten her German, who is not very understandable in French, and who in Italian knows only “ti amo,” I am ready to come and make a film with you. Ingrid Bergman. From this simple letter began one of the most popular love stories in cinema history. Roberto Rossellini and Ingrid Bergman were close friends with Enzo Ferrari. In a conversation with Enzo, Ingrid said, in regards to her custom ordered 212 Inter, “Instead of getting a new flat, we’re getting a new Ferrari with a bigger trunk.” Ingrid was elated with 0265 EU and called it her “Growling Baby.” After taking delivery of the Ferrari in Rome, Rossellini and Bergman drove the car north, through the Alps of northern Italy and Switzerland into Germany, and then caught a ferry to Denmark. They eventually arrived at the Grand Hotel in Stockholm at 3.00 a.m.; the following day Bergman received a movie award. Not just restricted to the duties of personal transportation, in August 1953, Rossellini raced 0265 EU in the VII Stella Alpina event. The car went to America in 1959 and in 1980 it was sold to Bob Smith who completely restored it. John Ridings Lee from Texas acquired it in the early 1990s, and later sold to Erich Traber of Bern, Switzerland. S/N 0265 EU has undergone a painstaking restoration bringing the car back to its original colour combination of silver (gray) over black and is ready to participate in the most prestigious vintage Ferrari events. Full documentation of the restoration, which was carried out in Germany, is available as well as copies of the first registration document in the name of Roberto Rossellini himself. Part of the history file contains many photos of the first trip Roberto Rossellini and Ingrid Bergman took to Sweden in the car. Any early Ferrari is a rare and worthy find, but it is difficult to imagine one more appealing than three-time Academy Award winning actress Ingrid Bergman’s “Growling Baby”. Ingrid Bergman Con questa semplice lettera iniziò una delle storie d’amore più famose della storia del cinema. Roberto Rossellini ed Ingrid Bergman erano molto amici di Enzo Ferrari. La vettura è corredata di documentazione completa relativa al restauro, effettuato in Germania, e di copi del documento di prima immatricolazione intestato allo stesso Roberto Rossellini.
