Michelotto started out as an authorised Ferrari dealer in Padova, a small town fifty miles from Venice. In the late 1970s the company started building and race-preparing lightweight 308s for Ferrari France as well as various privateers. Less than twenty of these rally cars were built; they would prove to be very successful and immensely popular with rally fans who were thrilled to see Ferraris in this form of motor sport. In the early ’80s Ferrari approached Michelotto to do some development work on the 288 GTO and ultimately to build a series of ultra-sophisticated 288 GTO racing cars, the 288 GTO Evoluziones. Six of these cars were built and they were acquired by some of the world’s most famous collectors, including the Sultan of Brunei. In the late 1980s Ferrari retained Michelotto again, this time to assist with the development of the replacement for the 288 GTO, the F40. The Ferrari F40 was launched in 1987 to celebrate the manufacturer’s fortieth anniversary. Enzo Ferrari was ninety years old and this model would be the last car bearing his name that he would see. Bodied by Carrozzeria Pininfarina, Sergio Pininfarina described the car. “In 1987, forty years after Ferrari won his first victory as a constructor in his own right, the event was celebrated by the appearance of the F40, a berlinetta with every right to be called the fastest car on the road. It has all the features of a racing car and of an ordinary road car, thus renewing the concept dear to the 1960s when everyday Ferraris were winning races all over the world. The F40 was the last car to be christened by Enzo Ferrari: my admiration and affection for him were immense; I was jealously proud of the esteem in which he held me and, for me, he was a guiding light. Now, he is no longer with us and those who are responsible for continuing his work are well aware of the task that lies ahead of them. For my part, my commitment is even greater than before and this applies to everything that unites, and continues to unite, the names of Pininfarina and Ferrari.” Once the F40 was introduced, Michelotto was commissioned to develop the car for the track and the first was completed in October 1988. The chassis was stiffened and a revised racing suspension, wide OZ alloy wheels, Brembo ventilated disc brakes and a racing gearbox were all fitted. Visually the car was similar to the road version but with a carbon fibre splitter, rear diffusers and adjustable rear wing. The pop-up headlights were replaced with Perspex covered units, giving the car an even more aggressive, purposeful look than its road going sister car. Additional NACA-ducts were fitted to help with cooling and the weight was cut down to just 1,050kg. The Tipo F120B engine produced 720bhp at 7,500 rpm, rivalling a Formula 1 car, and with the 38 mm air restrictors removed the car produced a staggering 785bhp. The F40 Le Mans would do an incredible 370 km/h (230 mph) and reach 100 km/h (62 mph) from standstill in 3.1 seconds. Ferrari test driver Dario Benuzzi began an intensive development programme with 30,000 km invested in the first prototype. Several top drivers were also recruited during the development of the LM. The car’s competition debut was in the North American IMSA GT Championship in October 1989, with Jean Alesi driving the F40 LM at Laguna Seca. The Formula 1 driver finished a promising third in a highly competitive field – a good result particularly as he was forced to run with engine intake restrictors. Ferrari France was the first team to campaign the Ferrari F40 LM and in the following season they added another four podium finishes to their record with a line up of guest drivers including Jean Pierre Jabouille, Jacques Laffite and Hurley Haywood. In 1994 the BPR Championship gave the F40 LM another lease of life, two years after the end of road car production. The LM scored numerous victories in this international series and also in domestic GT championships. The F40 LM was competing in top flight GT racing up to 1996 and as recently as 1995 finished sixth in class in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In total, Michelotto-built 19 F40 LM’s for America’s IMSA series and Europe’s GTC Championship. The Company also built an additional seven F40 GT’s for the Italian Supercar Championship and another seven F40 LM GTE’s for the BPR GT series. The Ferrari F40 LM presented here, chassis number 88513 is the third car of the 19 IMSA LMs built. The invoice from Ferrari shows that the car was originally sold to a German collector and describes this car as, “No.1 F40 LM Competition Prototype car, VIN ZFFGX34XOLOO88513, Engine no. F12OB008, coming from our “Esperienze” Dept.” The car was completed in May 1990 and has been used very sparingly during its life, and has never been raced. Auto Motor Sport magazine tested the car in their July 1991 issue. Between December 2005 and July 2007 a full inspection and service was carried out by Michelotto at a cost of over €60,000. Following this, DK Engineering tested the car at the Ferrari Owner’s Club test day at Silverstone in July 2007 and the car ran faultlessly. This Ferrari F40 LM is finished in Rosso Corsa; it has a standard interior and has had just three owners from new. It is a fabulous example of just 19 cars specially built by Micholotto. The car is ready to be entered in a variety of events worldwide and can be raced for the first time in championships such as the GT 90’s Revival Series. Additionally, in 2009 it will probably be eligible for the Ferrari Historic Championship and in the right hands this Ferrari will undoubtedly be the car to beat. Da parte mia, il mio impegno è ancora maggiore di quanto non lo fosse prima e questo vale per tutto ciò che unisce e continuerà ad unire i nomi Pininfarina e Ferrari.” Una volta lanciata la F40, Michelotto fu incaricato di sviluppare la vettura per la pista e la prima fu completata nell’ottobre del 1988. Il telaio fu rinforzato e la vettura fu dotata di sospensioni da corsa potenziate, ampi cerchi in lega OZ, freni a disco ventilati Brembo e cambio da corsa. Esteticamente la vettura era simile alla versione da strada, ma con uno spoiler in fibra di carbonio, diffusori posteriori e un alettone posteriore regolabile. I fari furono sostituiti con fari rivestiti in Perspex che conferivano alla vettura un look ancora più aggressivo e funzionale rispetto alla gemella da strada. Sulla vettura furono montati condotti di ventilazione supplementari per migliorare il raffreddamento e il peso fu ridotto ad appena 1.050 kg. Il motore Tipo F120B sviluppava 720 CV di potenza a 7.500 giri al minuto, competendo con quelli delle vetture da Formula 1. Dopo l’eliminazione dei restrittori dell’aria da 38 mm, la vettura fu in grado di sviluppare una straordinaria potenza di 785 CV. La F40 Le Mans raggiungeva un’incredibile velocità di 370 km/h e scattava, da ferma, da zero a 100 km/h in 3,1 secondi. Il collaudatore della Ferrari Dario Benuzzi iniziò un intenso programma di sviluppo con 30.000 km percorsi sul primo prototipo. La fattura della Ferrari indica che la vettura fu originariamente venduta ad un collezionista tedesco e descrive questa vettura come, “Il Prototipo da Competizione di F40 LM numero uno, VIN ZFFGX34XOLOO88513, motore n° F12OB008, proveniente dal nostro “Reparto Esperienze”.” La vettura fu completata nel maggio 1990 e da allora è stata utilizzata in modo molto parsimonioso per tutta la sua vita, non avendo mai gareggiato.
