Description
ILLUSTRATED POPULAR BIOGRAPHY OF CONNECTICUT. Compiled and Published by J.A. Spalding. © 1891 FIRST EDITION Published by J.A. Spalding, Hartford, Connecticut. 10” x 7.5” blind-stamped cloth hardcover with gilt titles. Illustrated with vignette portraits sketched from photos. 374 pages. Condition: Good condition overall. Corners and spine ends bumped, slight edge and surface wear. Strong inner hinges, tight binding. Pages slightly toned but clean and in nice condition. No torn, loose or missing pages. No dampstains, no musty smells. Good example of this invaluable 117-year-old volume. Description: This is a massive 1890s collection of Connecticut biographies. In most volumes of this type, inclusion was restricted to professionals such as state and local officials, bankers, mill owners, etc. The beauty of this book is that men from all kinds of business backgrounds are included. You’ll find the captains of industry and the rich bankers sharing pages with farmers, opticians, jailers, newspaper editors, merchants, dentists, doctors, mechanics, carpenters and men from many other walks of life. There are about 700 individual profiles in this book, each with an accompanying vignette portrait (sketched from photos supplied by the subjects themselves). The profiles consist of wall-to-wall information: family, education, professional career, special skills or expertise, current employment (at the time of publication), membership in fraternal organizations, etc. Of special note in each profile is information regarding individual military careers. Many of these men were Civil War veterans. Specifics regarding military service – where stationed, rank and promotions, length of service, honors, etc. – comprise an important part of their profiles. In fact, a number of the portraits depict these men in their military uniforms.. In the Introduction, the publisher describes how the book came to be: During the month of December, 1890, one or two leading citizens of every town and city in Connecticut were interviewed by the writer, and an arrangement was made in conformity with which these gentlemen subsequently submitted a list of names of nearly two thousand persons in all portions of the State, prominent in business or professional life, or who were holding public positions and properly entitled to be included in a popular biography of the Commonwealth. The list thus furnished included State, county, town and municipal officials, representatives of the judiciary, the clergy, the military, the bar, physicians, merchants, manufacturers, artisans, business men, and whoever else among the inhabitants of the State could be regarded as commendably conspicuous in local or general affairs The creation of this volume appears to have caused some frustration as well as unintentional humor: To each of the individuals thus designated a personal invitation was extended to appear in the proposed volume, the scope and character of which were fully described and explained. Each recipient of the invitation was requested to furnish data from which an accurate biography of himself might be prepared, and to provide a photograph from which a vignette portrait might be made, for publication in the book. The invitation was a cordial one, but no effort was made to induce anybody to accept it against his wishes. Of the two thousand persons thus invited, about seven hundred accepted unconditionally and furnished the information sought. These seven hundred are included in the present volume. Others desired to appear in the book, but imposed conditions which could not be complied with, such as that the portrait should be a full-page steel plate; or that the sketch should carry an advertisement of the subject’s business; and in one case a gentleman who has a local reputation for writing poetry insisted that sundry specimens of his verse must accompany the sketch … As a historian myself, I completely understand the genealogist’s quest for specific information about his or her ancestors. Books such as this can be quite valuable for research or just for the joy of having, if one’s ancestor is included. Usually, folks interested in books like this are either hesitant to bid or must first contact the seller and await a reply because they cannot be certain whether their ancestor is represented among the biographies. Again, as a historian, I sympathize with that predicament. Which is why I have taken the extra step of including some helpful details below, namely a comprehensive summary of every individual profiled in the book. It required many hours and a couple of headaches to compile, but at last it is complete. I feel it has been worth it. I would rather go the extra mile than think that someone out there might miss out on retrieving some rare biographical information about an ancestor. You’ll find my summary below, along with some photos of the book further down the page. All of this is to help you make an informed decision when bidding. I hope you’ll take a moment to have a look.
